There are many reasons to work out at home instead of regularly going to a gym. Whether you need to keep an eye on the baby monitor, you like to work out in your pajamas, or you just love the privacy and serenity of being in your own home, you don’t have to compromise the quality of your workouts. With just a few simple- but versatile, pieces of equipment you can modify almost any workout to be done effectively at home!

Read on for what I think are the 5 most essential pieces of equipment (totaling under $300!) every person with at-home fitness goals should have!

Black Mountain Products Resistance Band Set

If you need to start with just one piece of equipment, this is it. These resistance bands will completely replace the cable machine at the gym and most dumbbell exercises can be modified to use resistance bands so you can easily get a full-body strengthening workout in with these!

I also love the pouch they come in because I like to throw this in my suitcase when we travel- it’s like having a portable gym wherever we go!

Balance Form Rubber Encased Hex Dumbbells

To build a stronger body, you need to challenge your muscles and I recommend hex dumbbells for that! The hex shape is unique because it provides you with stability during movements such as renegade rows. They can also be used as push-up bars to take the stress off of your wrists!

Start with a pair of the 20lb dumbbells, but I suggest that eventually, you collect light, medium, and heavy pairs of dumbbells such as 5lbs, 10lbs, and 20lbs. You’ll be able to do most dumbbell workout programs with that set!

Trideer Extra Thick Stability Ball

Once you have your basic forms of resistance, this is where some other personal trainers would tell you to get a bench. I think that a stability ball is an economical substitute for a bench that also does so much more!

You can sit or lay on it for exercises like the bench press or shoulder press. You can also prop your feet up on it for hip thrusts, or lean against it for inclined movements, and you can use it for deep core work! The stability ball is a really versatile piece of equipment that every home gym needs.

REP Fitness Sandbag

If you’re ready to take your at-home fitness to the next level, it’s time to invest in a sandbag. This piece of equipment is a budget-friendly way to massively increase your resistance without having to stockpile dumbbells or invest in large, bulky items like barbells and plates.

The sandbag can be filled cheaply with sandbox sand from your local hardware store and has multiple handles so you can comfortably grip it for heavier squats, deadlifts, and more!

Lebert Fitness Equalizer Dip Bars

Okay, I know these don’t look like much but they are a powerful piece of equipment and the last piece I highly recommend all at-home gyms have. These bars will replace a dip station, push-up bars, pull-up bars, an ab station, and more!

I recommend investing in your resistance training equipment such as dumbbells first, but don’t sleep on getting these bars too so you can unlock the power of using your own bodyweight!

Aside from these 5 items, all else I recommend is having a sturdy chair, a mirror, and an exercise mat (if you don’t have one, I recommend the Ewedoos Non-Slip Exercise Mat which is thickly padded but not so much to make you feel unstable!)
